About the Song

Our Baby Dedication Service was coming up (we do 2 a year at BCC) and the few songs that worked well for the service were getting well worn. I thought I’d try to write my own song for it. With a good 5 years of fatherhood behind me, I felt qualified to write about children and dedicating them to the Lord so I went to it. This is the song that resulted.

While writing the song I relied on God’s inspiration and drew from my experience as a father. Early in marriage, my wife and I faced infertility. God guided us through 2 wonderful adoption experiences. Then in February of 2009 God gave us wonderful gift of a natural conception. Our third child was born on my 30th birthday. Needless to say, it was an answer to prayer. We see our children as gifts that God has entrusted to us to care for and raise to be obedient servants of Jesus.

I have found much joy and purpose in singing this song to our newborn. I hold him and sing this to him. What a wonderful prayer God has given me to speak into my children’s lives. I pray this song will bless many more parents out there who realize the wonderful and scary task they have as a parent.

Lyrics

In Good Hands
Copyright 2009 Ben Chilcote

I closed my eyes and said a prayer
And when I looked down you were there
And you were placed into my arms
So amazing

Who am I that God would trust
His little one into my love
And now it all seems up to me
You’re small and helpless

Your steps are ordered
Your hairs are counted
I’ve been entrusted
With God’s beloved

How will I teach you how to walk
When I’m so prone to wander off
How will I teach you how to live
To love and give

How will I teach you how to trust
When I don’t keep my promises
How can I teach you all these things
I’m still learning

Your steps are ordered
Your hairs are counted
A life awaits you
Like a fountain

I am the only world you see
Your tiny hand reaches to me

So I take you by the hand
Close my eyes and pray again
Today I place my dreams for you
In His hands

And one day when you are grown
And walk with Jesus on your own
I know you finally will be
In good hands

Through the tears and
Through the laughter
The Lord goes with you
Before and after

He is longing
For the moment
He can walk with
His beloved

Our steps are ordered
Our hairs are counted
He has never
Missed a moment

    Hi Ben,

I am a pastor at a church in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. We wanted a song for our son Kenan’s dedication that was quiet, reflective, and intentionally about pointing to Jesus.

I stumbled across the song on YouTube, then bought it from iTunes and made a video with it. Our church loved it, and they keep asking me who wrote the song. So I am directing them to your site. It was a blessing for us, and I hope it will be for others. One young adult woman even told me she was ‘sobbing’ (she has two little ones of her own).

    Blessings,
    Dave

      Blessings to you, too.
      Ben

    Hi Ben,
We waited seven years for our miracle second born son to arrive. During those years our dear church friends would sit and pray with us and kept our faith going as doctors had told us that it was impossible for us to have another child. When God answered our prayers and blessed us with our beautiful son, we wanted something special to mark his dedication day. I stumbled across your song on the internet and it was just perfect. It said all the things that we were feeling and more importantly kept our focus on Jesus. We bought it via your download and made a slide show to go with it. At the beginning of Ethan Asher’s dedication we played your reflective song, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the church. We feel truly blessed and touched by your song so from the bottom of our hearts thank you.

Hi Ben! I am a mother of three and also a soloist.. I was so touched by your song that by the time i finished listening to it i was in tears. I was asked to sing for a baby dedication and i knew right away this song was the perfect one. I believe it touched everyone that heard it today and made the dedication very special. So thank you for your ministry through music. I hope you continue to be inspired by God’s wonderful love! You have touched us all.

Blessings to you and your family!

On Saturday May 7th 2011, I presented my 2 year old daughter Jaide Amri to our Lord and my brother is one of her godparents. At the end of the service, my pastor announced that my brother wanted to sing a song to my daughter. He started singing this song. My heart was overflowing with joy and my eyes were over flowing with tears of happiness! this is by far thee most beautifulest songs i have ever heard. Thank you so much for such touching words and music. God bless you!
